These positions are for qualified veterinarians who want an unrivalled experience in a busy equine clinic.

Our internships provide mentored exposure to a large caseload of surgical and internal medicine cases in the centre of the main Thoroughbred racing and  breeding area in Ireland.

We offer 4 by twelve month internships per year, 2 normally beginning in January and 2 beginning in July/August.

The hospital will provide a wage and pay for professional indemnity insurance and registration with the Veterinary Council of Ireland. Although we do not provide or pay for accommodation, we can assist in finding suitable housing locally. Interns would also be responsible for their own transport.  Many of our previous interns have also been able to secure funding from their own Governments or another source of sponsorship. All interns must be eligible to register with the Veterinary Council of Ireland (www.vci.ie) prior to starting at the hospital.

Our internships offer opportunities to broaden your experience and skills with both surgical and internal medicine cases. During the breeding season a large proportion of the caseload involves neonatal intensive care, dystocias, post foaling issues. During the year you  will also work with  cases involving medical colics, colitis, ill thrift cases, gastroscopies, respiratory illnesses etc. Our surgical cases involve many elective procedures such as arthroscopies, upper airway surgeries, angular limb deformities and emergency surgeries such as colics, dystocias, fracture repairs, ruptured bladders, joint flushes etc. Interns are also trained to perform anaesthesia with modern equipment and facilities. Dealing with outpatient appointments that involve lameness investigations, ultrasound, radiography, scintigraphy, upper airway assessment etc. will all be part of the daily routine.

We currently have 2  full time surgeons and an internal medicine specialiast, along with a team of experienced veterinary nurses to guide and educate our interns through their internships.

Previous interns have been successful in obtaining residency positions at prestigious universities in the USA and Europe.

Any interested individuals can apply by forwarding a comprehensive C.V. detailing all of their relevant equine experience and qualifications, at least 2 references from within the veterinary industry and a cover letter outlining their veterinary interests, experience and career objectives. All suitable candidates will be invited to visit the clinic for a period of at least 3 days for interview and assessment and to meet the team here at Anglesey Lodge. All correspondence regarding an internship or queries can be forwarded to Hospital Manager Mary Wade at nursing@aleh.ie.

The next available positions are from July/August 2021 and suitable applicants will be invited to visit at their own expense during the early part of 2021.
